COMMUNITY STRATEGY 2006 - 2015
The Manchester Way is the city's sustainable Community Strategy. The strategy is being delivered through actions that will benefit everyone who lives in, studies in, works in, or enjoys Manchester. It will improve Manchester's economic, social and environmental foundations. If the city achieves its vision by 2015, Manchester, and its population, will be very different in the next decade:
- All areas of the city will benefit from the city's success, and every neighbourhood will be included
- Manchester people will be wealthier, live longer, be healthier and enjoy happier lives
- Children and young people will be safer, more resilient and fulfil their potential
- There will be more working families
- Six out of ten homes will be owner-occupied
Productivity (Gross Value Added per head) for Manchester will be greater than the UK average
- Manchester will be in the top 10 of European business cities
- The city's population will have increased to 480,000
- Manchester will be a green city, proud of its rapidly improving local and global environmental performance and the contribution of the environmental sector
- Manchester will develop sustainable transport to promote economic growth.
- Manchester has successfully achieved economic growth and this will continue over the next decade. It is time to focus on social improvements and the new vision incorporates both economic and social growth.
A short film - Life the Manchester Way - encapsulating the aspirations of residents for a better city is included in the strategy. It illustrates the concepts of neighbourhoods of choice; reaching full potential through employment and education; self-esteem and mutual respect - three 'spines' that have informed the new vision for Manchester.
